Made in Earth | Kithul Treacle

Jaggery is a sweetener that’s becoming popular as a “healthy” replacement for sugar. The glucose and fructose content in the kithul syrup/treacle/jaggery is extremely low and as a result in the Glycaemic Index or GI, this is ranked as a low GI food. In essence, it’s slower to digest, thus it doesn’t provide the rush of energy that refined sugar delivers. What’s more, this sweetener is often referred to as a “superfood sweetener.”

Sri Lanka’s age-old medicine called “Ayurveda” mentions that kithul jaggery can prevent constipation by aiding digestion by activating the digestive enzymes in our body. That’s why many Sri Lankans prefer eating jaggery after a meal but as far as the children are concerned of course it’s a mere sweet tooth craving in their minds. Kithul Jaggery acts as a detox, to help cleanse the liver by flushing out awful toxins from the body.

Kithul Jaggery brims with antioxidants and is rich in calcium, minerals, salts and fiber. Its regular consumption increases hemoglobin levels and treats anemia. Magnesium, on the other hand, regulates the nervous system and minerals like selenium and zinc help protect body cells from damages caused by free-radicals (responsible for early aging). It’s coupled to help boost resistance against infections and build stronger immunity in your body. Eating a piece of jaggery daily can help women combat PMS symptoms including mood swings, menstrual cramps and abdominal pain.
